Very simple method of making tomato powder is washing red ripe tomatoes and then cutting into small pieces. Thereafter dry the cut pieces in the sun for one to two weeks in a piece of cloth. When the cut pieces of the tomato fruits are dried well, put them into a blender to make fine powder. Make powder switching the blender on. Your tomato powder will be ready. The tomato powder can also be made from pure and concentrated tomato paste.

In large commercial tomato products making factory, tomato powder is made from tomato paste. The tomato paste is made by two methods: hot break paste or cold break paste. The tomato paste is free from tomato skin, seeds and long fibers. The machine that is used to make tomato powder from tomato paste is tomato dryers.

Studies supported that whole tomato powder may inhibit the development of prostrate cancer than the lycopene alone (Issue of November 5 of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute). The diet supplemented with tomato powder in rats had lowered risk of the death from prostrate cancer in comparison to the diet not supplemented with tomato powder.

Another thing is that you can store the tomato powder for longer duration than the fresh tomato or canned tomato or tomato sauce or tomato puree or tomato paste. But be careful that the tomato powder can form cake or clump if you keep the powder open in air. The lid of the tomato powder must be kept air tight.

The price of the fresh tomato may fluctuate in your country. The field grown tomato and tomato products made from the field grown tomato fruits are more beneficial than the greenhouse grown tomatoes. In large tomato processing industries, the tomato powder is generally made from field grown tomato fruits. So think on the matter too.

The tomato powder is very useful in the off-season. The Tomato powder made from the field grown tomato fruits in the main season is better than the off season grown fresh tomato fruits.

Because of indeterminate growth habit and fruit clusters of the tomato variety: Lapsi Gede (LG), the tomato variety can be an excellent ornamental tomato variety too. Since the tomato plant is an annual herb, it completes its growth and seed production in a year.

Nepal has some genetic resources of tomato. Some are tolerant to heat stress found in southern plain belt of Nepal and some are tolerant to cold stress found in hill of Nepal. Nepalese breeders are very interested to work in the breeding of tomato tolerant to heat and cold stress.

If the temperature, soil moisture and soil nutrients are enough in the soils, the tomato plants of Lapsi Gede can grow and produce tomato fruits up to one year. In the one year, the tomato plants die. Even If the tomato plants of the tomato variety: LG die because of chilling injury; when the favorable temperature comes and soils have enough nutrients and moisture, the shoot again regenerate foliage from the drying shoot.

If proper nitrogen level is available, high carbon/ nitrogen ratio is in the plant system; the tomato plants produce health fruit clusters and supply nutritious and delicious tomato fruits.
